Cybersecurity Tips for your Parents: Stay Safe Online

Ok so most of us are tech savvy and understand that the world wide web is fraught with danger, our parents not so much. My parents have been reading my posts and started asking me what all this means and how can they be more secure online…. Then they told me to write this, Thanks Mom & Dad!! 😊
Anyway, here are my rules that your folks should know:
  1. Criminals pray on the elderly!
  2. If it sounds to good to be true, it IS A SCAM!
  3. Never ever give out your banking PIN number to anyone EVER.
  4. If someone calls you claiming to be from you Bank, Government department etc asking for personal information DON’T GIVE IT. They should have this already.
    • If they threaten you, end the call.
    • Report it to the police
  5. Don’t trust Emails even if you are expecting something.
  6. Do not post your personal movements on Social Media…. Do it after the fact. The more you tell people the easier it is to get in harms way!
  7. Make sure that you have anti malware on your devices.
  8. Make sure your devices are updated.
Rules you should follow!!!

  1. Go visit your folks often and make sure you take care of them and their online security needs.
  2. Make sure their devices are updated.
  3. Check for rogue applications and the usual strange stuff
  4. Make their lives easier by lending a hand, even when you don’t “have time”.
